RUSSELL, BAY OF ISLANDS, NZ
...............with Ilford FP4 Plus 125 35mm
Russell, formerly known as Kororāreka (the place of sweet penguins), was the first permanent European settlement and sea port in New Zealand. It is situated in the Bay of Islands, in the far north of the North Island. As you stroll round Russell, Bay of Islands today, it's as if you’re walking back in time with history at every turn.
In Summer the place is filled with holiday makers and tourists, packing out the accommodation, the restaurants and the beaches.
In Winter the place is all but deserted and many of the accommodation businesses close for their own holidays during the months of June and July.
On a recent stroll around Russell, I took these photos with my Nikon F65 35mm film camera. The film I used was Ilford FP4 125.
I used a yellow filter on the lens, to soften the black and white contrasts, and have been pleased with the results.
I developed the negatives at home using Ilford Ilfotec LC29 and Ilford Rapid Fixer, and scanned them with my Epson Perfection V550 Photo scanner.
It's quite a thrill for me to be taking film photos and developing them myself. At almost 73 years old, it seems I am increasing my skills more and more as I get older. I learned about film photography and developing the negatives, when I attended a local polytechnic in 2017 at age 70. It's a wonderful thing to be able to do.
